M. Pierre Boulez
Director
IRCAM
31 rue Saint-Merri
75004 Paris, France

Dear Pierre:
\J
I find that I will be able to be in Paris in the autumn of
1981. During that time I would like very much to work at IRCAM again.
I would imagine that the most useful work for me would be to install all the
latest improvements to my music printing program, "MS", and, perhaps
even more important, to train some local people in the use of the program.
While the documentation on "MS" is complete, there are so many possible
approaches to the creation of good musical format that direct instruction
is advisable. (Nineteenth-century music engravers put in a ten year
apprenticeship!) At present I am working on an extensive teaching manual for
this program.

Also I would like to take part in the teaching of your visiting
composers. At Stanford I have been quite successful in getting people
into useful sound generation with a minimum of effort and without
wasting a lot of computer time.

If there were other activities that you would like me to take
part in I would be happy to consider them. My schedule for 1981 is
such that I could be in Paris from about August 20 until December 10.
My 1979 stay at IRCAM was very pleasant. I look forward to another
visit.
